Knife-wielding man arrested in Joypurhat, ASI injured in scuffle

Police have arrested a young man named Manik (28) in Akkelpur, Joypurhat. He was arrested from the road in front of the Upazila Parishad premises around 7:30 pm on Monday. Two knives were recovered from him at that time. He is locally known as Knife Manik. During the arrest of Manik, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Akkelpur Police Station Rashidul Islam was injured in a scuffle. He was given treatment at the Upazila Health Complex. Later, at around 10 pm, Upazila Executive Officer Manjurul Alam sentenced Manik to one year in prison through a mobile court.

The arrested Manik is the son of Montu Mia of Sakhidar Para in Akkelpur Municipality. Police said that there are multiple cases against him, including attempted murder, theft, robbery, and robbery. According to police and eyewitness sources, Manik was released on bail a few days ago. He was roaming around the Upazila Parishad area with a knife yesterday evening. Upon receiving the information, SI Rakibul Islam and ASI Rashidul Islam arrived at the scene. The two of them caught Manik in front of the Upazila Parishad and handcuffed him. At that time, Manik tried to run away. ASI Rashidul was injured during the scuffle. Manik was brought to the police station with the help of local people.

Akkelpur Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mominul Islam said, “Manik was in jail and was released on bail a few days ago. One of our officers was injured while arresting him. Manik was also a drug addict.”
